Author Note: Obviously I didn't have to work today. I'm not usually quite this quick with the tags. Lots of thoughts to be had after last night's ep. Lots of things to try to touch on.
Lots of heart eyes for my partner in crime, who puts up with me spamming her with no less than three story drafts in the span of two hours.
Finnish; Extraordinary determination in the face of adversity. Rowena braces a hand against the wall and struggles to pull herself to her feet. She doesn't make it completely there, sinks back down onto the steps and draws her bloody hands into her lap, looking uncharacteristically shell-shocked. Sam tracks her movements with wide eyes. He's feeling a bit off-balance himself, still trying to catch his breath for multiple reasons. You okay? Michael burned hard and fast within her, and no one could possibly expect her to recover this quickly.
But she squares her shoulders and smiles tightly, lifts her chin. He follows her lead and takes in the state of the room, deflating at the tracks and smears of blood on the floor and walls, the fallen hunters. At his side, Dean takes a step closer to the carnage and immediately wavers, his knees buckling as they refuse to carry his weight for another moment. Dean's face is chalk-white, the ghostly pallor making the gash in his forehead and bruises around his eye look that much more gruesome, and he presses his lips together in a tight line as he fights to stay upright.
Sam's a bit disoriented himself in the wake of those sightless, oxygen-deprived moments courtesy of Michael, with phantom aches singing out from his nerve endings.
But he doesn't have the added bonus of a nasty concussion, and a very recent stretch of concerning unconsciousness. He attempts to steer Dean toward the nearest chair but his brother stubbornly locks his knees, planting himself where he stands. The angel moves forward and Dean immediately shrugs Sam away, bracing himself against the tabletop with his right hand as he raises his left to keep Cas at bay. Sam clenches his jaw, nostrils flaring in frustration. He's so goddamned sick of everyone being fine all the time.
Before he can voice his irritation, Cas beats him to it. His brother smirks, tired eyes roaming the thrashed room. He used you. He hurt you. Not you. Because you're right, Dean. I'm the one who wouldn't let you go into the Mal'ak box. Michael has been pounding on that door in your mind nonstop for weeks. You said so yourself. There was some space between the ending of 14x11 and the beginning of 14x12, so this is in an attempt to fill it in after the episodes pretty much broke my heart.
Happy th episode! I don't own Supernatural or the Avengers hey, if the show can pretty much blatantly reference the latest movie twice, so can I. The night they left Donna's cabin, Baby hitched up pulling Dean's soon to be coffin behind her, proved to be one of Sam's longest. And he'd lived through more than a lifetime's worth of long nights. So it only figured that when they finally stopped for the rest of the night, he was up before Dean. Sam wasn't sure if he had ever actually drifted off, he more faded in and out until the exhaustion, both physical and emotional, finally got the better of him.
Still, he kept one ear trained on the door and for any other noises. Though he doubted Dean would up and leave without Sam knowing after their discussion about Dean almost doing that just hours ago, he had considered snaking the Impala's keys just to be safe.
But he had left them where they were, partially as a showing of faith and trust when Dean set them down in the open, and partially because he couldn't fathom Dean just leaving without saying goodbye even though it had almost just happened.
It had been too much to wrap his head around. What ended up waking him wasn't the sound of the door closing and knowing that Dean was gone, it was knowing he was still there. After years of hunting, his ears had been tuned to the slightest change in sound, and while it took him a second to register what had changed, when it did, he almost wished for earplugs.
Dean was still in the next bed over, but his breathing was harsh and erratic. Sam didn't need any other information to tell that his brother was in the throws of a nightmare, and seemingly a bad one at that. His eyes adjusted to the darkness, and just from the light pooling in from the window, he could see the quick rise and fall of Dean's back, as he was flipped over on his stomach, which did nothing to help his breathing. While it was risky, if the nightmare got bad enough, Sam would wake Dean up.
Of course, he'd promptly step back with his hands raised to avoid the knife or gun that was about to be pulled. Sometimes they'd say a few words in a way of 'talking it out', but more often than not, Dean covered with some form of a stalker joke and they both went back to bed, though neither of them fell back asleep.
Nightmares came with the gig, it was just a fact, and something that they had more or less adjusted to over the years and dealt with. But this…with Michael trying to bust out of Dean's head, possibly even when he was asleep, how could Sam know that waking Dean up wouldn't give Michael the opening he needed to take control again? That Dean's defenses and consciousness keeping Michael back wouldn't falter if he was jerked out of a nightmare?
Sam couldn't possibly know for sure. He got halfway through his thought process before Dean's breath started hitching and he began calling out, softly at first, but then more desperate. It made Sam's own heart still in his chest and his whole body tense.
But the Demon strikes and Johns terrified that he will hurt Melissa and leaves with his boys without a goodbye. What he didn't know was that he also left his child. Few years later and he's back and finds a few surprises.

But if he says is true then Why was Michael acting so shady? Why is Lucifer so overprotective? Why is his baby brother Cas insisting he stay? Why won't Dean leave him alone? And Why does Sam insist he loves him? What could the possibilities be for Sam and Dean if one detail was different?
