How do you make sure you can use features like DSC calling easily without having strange problems with AIS targets on your chartplotter, or nuisance collision alarms? How do you get the maximum benefit from the combination of these technologies? Making these things work properly takes a little research and the right answer depends on the devices you may already have on your boat.
For AIS Receive-only, you really only need one device now. Because of this I only listed Standard Horizon radios above in combinations that would actually provide the DSC calling functionality.
Further, the GX model does not support NMEA making integration slightly more complex compared to the Icom m and m radios. With this combination, you have to mitigate a few issues that result from having two receivers on board.
In any case, having two AIS receivers on board is costlier, and more complicated. Technology is changing so fast that older systems may have problems integrating. Just a question, why not to choose a vhf with rx AIS? For day sailing, I only switch the vhf and got AIS information, which in many occasions is enough.
There does not appear to be any such functionality in any of the Standard Horizon models…. Both units, of course, are programmed with the same MMSI. This is good, and certainly helps with some of the issues. I will note that I scoured the installation and user guides for all of the SH models prior to writing this post and did not find any mention of the MMSI being ignored.
In any case, having two AIS receivers on the same network can cause issues, though it may not. Also, filtering out your own MMSI is a bare minimum in my opinion. For smaller cruising boats with inflatable or nesting tenders, this is obviously not an issue, but larger yachts often tow AIS equipped tenders. Signal leakage could theoretically occur.
I think most modern MFDs support source selection, but older units may not…. And commercial tugs towing a barge or log-boom transmit only one AIS target, and their payload is much more valuable and poses a much greater risk to other vessels than does a towed tender. If it should become separated from the mothership, its position could be easily determined using a DSC Position Request call.

For Transmit and Receive AISthere are three primary combinations that work well enough to recommend. I have categorized them into Good, Better, and Best options. I was using a splitter before with one vhf antenna and my reception on both the vhf and the AIS was terrible. This scout antenna looks and works flawlessly.
I think it has a lot to do with the fact that is tuned specifically for the AIS frequencies. I definitely feel safer now. AIS is used in navigation primarily for collision avoidance. Due to the limitations of VHF radio communications, and because not all vessels are equipped with AIS, the system is meant to be used primarily as a means of lookout and to determine risk of collision rather than as an automated collision avoidance system, in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea COLREGS.
When a ship is navigating at sea, the movement and identity of other ships in the vicinity is critical for navigators to make decisions to avoid collision with other ships and dangers shoal or rocks. However, a lack of positive identification of the targets on the displays, and time delays and other limitation of radar for observing and calculating the action and response of ships around, especially on busy waters, sometimes prevent possible action in time to avoid collision.
While requirements of AIS are only to display a very basic text information, the data obtained can be integrated with a graphical electronic chart or a radar display, providing consolidated navigational information on a single display. AIS was developed with the ability to broadcast positions and names of objects other than vessels, like navigational aid and marker positions.
These aids can be located on shore, such as in a lighthouse, or on the water, on platforms or buoys. The terms can mean two things; in the first case, an AIS transmission describes the position of physical marker but the signal itself originates from a transmitter located elsewhere.
For example, an on-shore base station might broadcast the position of ten floating channel markers, each of which is too small to contain a transmitter itself. In the second case, it can mean AIS transmissions that indicate a marker which does not exist physically, or a concern which is not visible i. Although such virtual aids would only be visible to AIS equipped ships, the low cost of maintaining them could lead to their usage when physical markers are unavailable. For most coastal and offshore navigation, a AIS receiver is typically all one needs to make better navigation and collision avoidance decisions - you will be given plenty of data from all ships exceeding tons, as well as other voluntary vessels transmitting AIS data in your proximity.
The range is limited by the VHF capabilities of the sending party, usually 20 nautical miles, though data can be sporatic outside of the mile mark.

A stand-alone AIS receiver must be hooked up to a VHF antenna to receive data, and data will be displayed on your chartplotter. There is another option available!
